making

I´ve finished some of the christmas ornaments - I loved making these. I gave the owl to my friend today, but made another one already (it will also be a gift). My hand warmers are finished too. I´m not 100% satisfied with how they came out, but I don´t really know how to do things differently, so for now, these will have to do. And my new scarf: I love all things light pink these days, I guess it´s caused by hormones, but this colour appeales to me so much.

what I´ve been making

I finished my pink winter cap and I love it! It looks a bit 30s, exactly how I wanted it to look.
Also I started to make some small christmas ornaments - tiny outfits, and I really like them so far :). And look what I´m also making right now: at last, hand warmers (or how should I call them). I´m very happy with what I have so far, and I hope they´ll turn out nice.

I need some colour

I started making a new cap for myself! I´m quite excited, as the material is lovely, 60% acryl and 40% wool - feels very nice and isn´t too expensive. In this dread winter I suddenly wanted some colour: pink, cobalt blue. Actually I´ve been thinking about sewing a winter coat (I´ve seen some really nicely coloured wool coating fabrics on the net), and I loved the pinks and blues. I´d love a light dusty pink coat and also a dark cobalt blue (I hope it´s what it´s called in English) coat. I can´t decide which colour I´d choose! Blue is more practical, but pink seems so feminine and cute. Anyway: I´m too big now to wear a nicely shaped coat, also I don´t have any time to make it. So, what I do, is dream about the coat I would make if I could :). With a hood, long enough (to the knees), more fitted at the top and looser in the lower area. Something like this coat from Burda style (but with a hood). I have to wear a really funny coat now, because my nice coats don´t fit me anymore, and I hope that this nice vivid pink and orange cap will brighten it up nicely. I hope this time I´m successful, because I had to undo one of the cotton caps I was making (the dark blue and cream cap in an earlier post) - it was too big. Starting again...
Other than this, I´m very happy that I bought almost all of my christmas presents - and I really like what I got so far. A beautiful book for Marie (I may show you some pictures later), as well as handmade doll for her, a special wine drink for my father, really nice shopping bags for my mother and mother in law, so far a shirt and a book for my husband.
And I have some big plans for the near future: finishing some paintings and starting a new one, sewing some cute maternity clothes (probably a skirt - I´m inspired by these patterns), making a doll from fimo (and maybe some other smaller things), making something from felt... this list is never ending :). I just hope to find the energy to make at least something.

crocheting

I´ve been crocheting a lot lately. I love that you can do this while talking to guests and that you don´t need too much equipment. The grey acrylic cap is for Marie and is very warm (I hope!). The cotton one will be for me and I want to make it bright, colourful and playful :). I also bought some more yarn for more caps!

finished cap

I finished the crocheted cap for my husband. It´s made of very nice yarns - one is light grayish green cotton and the second one is cream cotton/linen blend. I loved the green, but again, I only bought one skein and when I realized I want more it was too late (or maybe they only had this one piece when I was at the shop, I can´t remember). Unfortunately it´s too hot for the cap now, but I hope he likes it. The photo shows more of the cactus than the cap... of course :).
And I found this photo of my grandma Z during the day of her wedding in 1959. Don´t you love the car behind her? I think cars were so much more beautiful in the past than they are today :). I like that the photo is so casual, no make up or posing. I´ve seen profesional portrait photo of her and my grandpa as newlyweds, and she looked totally different than here. Also, I like her dress, and I like that it looks sor of casual too. I think it´s quite a new thing to get married in a "princess" dress like we are used to these days. Women not so long ago wore pretty ordinary dresses to their wedding, just white (light coloured) and a bit more luxurious. I like that, and I actually wore a very simple and relatively cheap dress to my own wedding too:).

another cap for Marie

I finished my second crocheted cap. Unfortunatelly, I ran out of the yarn I worked with, and couldn´t find the exact colour anywhere (it´s generally quite bad with the color selection in shops here...). I finished the cap with another shade of dark blue. I´m quite pleased with the cap, but I´m still not sure how to make some things. There is i.e. visible line on the side of the cap where I finished each row... I think the cap should be smooth all over when done right. Also, I don´t know how to finish the whole thing off properly. I tie it somehow, but don´t think I do it the right way. Anyway, I like it, and I like the flower (although I think I didn´t follow the instructions very well :).

it´s a cap!

So, after much ripping, improvising and further crocheting, I made a cap for my little Marie! It´s certainly far from perfect, but that´s ok... I´m going to make more caps in near future :). I really like crocheting and would like to buy some nice book to learn more and to have some guidance.

green

The top of my white cabinet (a place where I store everything; my whole life is in there! :) is all green now. My blue - green linen is waiting to be sewn into something and I made a progress on one of the paintings I am working on. It´s acrylic on canvas, a technique I´ve never tried before, and I love it. The colours react differently than tempera colors, but I like the look. They also dry very quicky, which is ok on the canvas, but not so fine on the pallette... I know it´s possible to buy some liquid that can delay the process, so maybe I´ll give it a try.
And look, I crocheted! It´s a small ring so far, but I would really really like to make a cap from it. Do you think there is some hope? :)
I´ve been pretty productive lately, and it´s all because of the beautiful sunny weather.

and this is why I want to learn to crochet!

Simply because of these two things that I admire so much :). Sandra Juto´s wristworms and Camilla Engman´s softies. I thought about buying these from Sandra, but she stopped making the styles I liked most... And the little animals Camilla Engman makes... oh my! I love them badly. I know I can´t make anything as pretty as this, and I know it takes a lot of time to be able to do something similar. But I want to try! So far, I´ve made two poor rectangles and something that looks like a little cap :). Also, does anyone know how is the face (and maybe the rest of the body too, minus the head) in the photo made? The stitches look so tiny! It´s maybe because she used small hook and thin yarn...? (Excuse the lack of proper crochet terms, please :).
I have an exhibition planned for autumn (maybe two of them...), so my biggest task now is to paint, paint, paint. It takes quite a lot of time, so there is not much sewing ahead of me. I wanted to finish my black dress before we leave for Italy, but I wasn´t able to accomplish that. So that´s the only thing I want to get done soon.

crocheting... again

I borrowed few books from my friend and I try my hand at crocheting for the second time (after unsuccesful attempt a while ago). I would really really like to learn to crochet... However, it´s still a little intuitive thing for me, as the yarn fibres seem just so many and sometimes it gets a bit chaotic :). I would like to be able to make hats, soft toys/animals, maybe a scarf or a blanket... but so far I´ve only made this little rectangle. It´s made with the most simple crochet technique (I think... unfortunatelly I couldn´t find how it´s called in English...) and I wonder why there is the pattern - it turned out structured, while I thought it will be flat with no lines. I´m going to read my books, but it always looks easier in the book than it is in real life :). One of the books I have is pretty funny. It´s called something like "Crocheting: questions and answers" (it could be also called "Everything you wanted to know about crocheting, but were afraid to ask ;), and it addresses crocheting as it was some kind of difficult philosophy. There is a long list of "special thanks to..." in the beginning of the book, and it´s divided in countless chapters with names like "Loops". Maybe I´m weird, but I think this is pretty hilarious :).
