black leather bag
My new leather bag is finished finallly! It took me a long time to make it from the beginning to the end (I was working on it just here and there), but totally it was quite simple and quick to make. I made it out of an old leather coat from my friend (he bought it for me in a second hand shop in Hamburg and I gave him my graphics print in exchange :D). To tell the truth, I´m not sure what to think about it. The bag looks kind of brutal, and I nearly destroyed my sewing machine when making it, I think. I broke my leather needle, but I´m done with sewing leather I guess! Anyway, I plan to wear it. It´s not elegant, but I never aspired to be "elegant", really. It´ s practical (lots of pockets), big and sturdy. I´m not going to apply for a job wearing this bag, so it should be ok...? I don´t really know :). My thoughts when completing the bag were "I should save my money and buy a new, nice bag", haha. Well, I´m certainly going to give this bag a chance. My beige leather bag I made earlier is falling into pieces anyway... sadly. Maybe some nice brooch would save this black one? Let me know what you think :). My inspiration for the bag were Shannon South´s remade bags and rennes´Market tote bags.

Nice! I've yet to attempt sewing leather. I think a brooch would cut down on the toughness of it. Or you could celebrate the tough and add some metallic accents. But definitely use it!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot, Liza! I´m thinking about the brooch... and I guess I should be dressed neatly when wearing this bag :). It´ s also quite big... Isn´t there some fashion rule that small women shouldn´t wear big bags? :D
DeleteTie a small silk scarf around the handles? I would be afraind to put holes in the bag with a broach- if you didn't like it and took it out again the holes might get out of control...
ReplyDeleteCan't go wrong with a black bag! I have one too- girly it up with a small hanger? My bag has a small butterfly and a flower made of the leather, and just hanging on a small chain. My bug likes to chew them (yuk!).
I have only sewn with fake leather and it was a cow. Great job! =)
Thanks! Actually, I made the bag a bit smaller (not so deep), and I love it now! It´s much better now, so the size was the main problem I think. I had problems with holes on my previous leather bag - the brooch tore the material and there are multiple holes and the place where the brooch was is all scratched up.
ReplyDeleteDo you have a tutorial or pattern for this bag? I would love to make it. thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi, I don´t have a pattern nor a tutorial... but it´s basically two rectangles sewn together with corners shaped afterwards. a tutorial for box pouches could help you!
